How Credit Card Interest Works

Understanding APR

APR is the annual cost of borrowing. Typical credit card APRs range from 15% to 25% and can exceed 30%.

Daily Rate = APR ÷ 365. Example: 18% APR → Daily Rate ≈ 0.0493% Monthly Rate ≈ 1.5%

How Interest Is Calculated

Most cards use the Average Daily Balance method. Monthly interest equals the average balance multiplied by the daily rate and number of days.

Example calculation shows how purchases and payments affect the daily balance and monthly interest.

The Grace Period

  • No interest if paid in full monthly
  • Usually 21–25 days
  • Lost if you carry a balance

The Minimum Payment Trap

How Minimum Payments Are Calculated

Common methods:

  • Interest + 1% of balance
  • Flat percentage (2%–4%)
  • Higher of percentage or fixed amount

The True Cost of Minimum Payments
