Electrical Panel Load Calculation

Standard Calculation Method (NEC)

The standard method for calculating residential service load includes:

  1. General Lighting: 3 VA per square foot of living space
  2. Small Appliance Circuits: 1,500 VA each (minimum 2)
  3. Laundry Circuit: 1,500 VA
  4. Appliances: Nameplate ratings
  5. Motor Loads: 25% of largest motor

Load Centers

Common residential panel sizes:

  • 100A - Small homes, apartments
  • 150A - Medium homes, all-electric small homes
  • 200A - Standard for most new homes
  • 400A - Large homes, estates, with many electrical appliances

80% Rule

For continuous loads (3+ hours), the NEC requires the load not exceed 80% of the breaker or panel rating. This prevents overheating and ensures safe operation.
