Standard Calculation Method (NEC)
The standard method for calculating residential service load includes:
- General Lighting: 3 VA per square foot of living space
- Small Appliance Circuits: 1,500 VA each (minimum 2)
- Laundry Circuit: 1,500 VA
- Appliances: Nameplate ratings
- Motor Loads: 25% of largest motor

Common residential panel sizes:

- 200A - Standard for most new homes
- 400A - Large homes, estates, with many electrical appliances
80% Rule
For continuous loads (3+ hours), the NEC requires the load not exceed 80% of the breaker or panel rating. This prevents overheating and ensures safe operation.
