What is Wind Chill?
Wind chill is the perceived decrease in air temperature felt by the body on exposed skin due to the flow of air. It takes into account both the actual air temperature and the wind speed.
The wind chill temperature is always lower than the actual air temperature when there is wind. This is because wind removes the thin layer of warm air that surrounds your skin, making you feel colder.
The NWS Wind Chill Formula
The National Weather Service (NWS) wind chill formula was updated in 2001 to more accurately reflect the effect of wind on exposed skin:
Wind Chill (°F) = 35.74 + 0.6215×T - 35.75×V0.16 + 0.4275×T×V0.16
Where:
- T = Actual temperature in °F
- V = Wind speed in mph
Frostbite Safety Thresholds
The NWS provides specific wind chill thresholds for frostbite risk:

Important: These times assume exposed skin. With proper clothing, frostbite risk is significantly reduced.
